Kolkata: An order was issued on Monday by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) I, Calcutta, Bankshall Court, to arrest BJP leader Mukul Roy and produce him before the court within one month. Roy was summoned thrice earlier by the Kolkata Police for interrogation in a case of corruption which he did not comply to. After failing to appear thrice, on Monday, an arrest warrant was issued.
According to sources, during 2018, a person, identified as Kalyan Roy Burman, was arrested from Burrabazar with Rs 80 lakh.
When documents were sought from him regarding the money, Burman reportedly failed to provide any.
A case under IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act was initiated.
During the investigation, several names cropped up, including that of Mukul Roy. Following this, he was summoned to appear before the investigating officer for questioning. Despite repeated notices, Roy did not appear.
Monday was the third date for his appearance which he failed again.
Earlier, he was summoned to appear on March 27 and April 24 respectively which he did not adhere to. He filed an adjournment with the help of his lawyers on the ground that an application of his is pending before the Delhi High Court. But later, the plea was dismissed.
Monday was another date fixed for his appearance.
After it was found that Roy had again appealed for an adjournment on the ground of a writ petition filed in Delhi High Court, the concerned Magistrate rejected his appeal mentioning that filing of a writ petition does not mean that a stay order is passed.
Later, the Magistrate issued an arrest warrant and instructed the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Burrabazar police station to arrest Roy and produce him before the court on or before August 29.
