Couple jumps into River Hooghly, bodies yet to be found

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a young couple jumped into River Hooghly together from a vessel they had boarded near Millennium Park on Tuesday night.

Though the Disaster Management Group (DMG) and River Traffic Police launched a prolonged search operation, none of them could be

traced yet.

According to the sources, Avishek Shaw a resident of Mullick Bazar area had an affair with a theatre personality identified as Sujata Prasad, alias Priyanka.

A few years ago, both of them met at a theatre workshop. After that they fell for each other and got involved in a relationship.

Later, Shaw came to know that Prasad was married before which was not going right and as a result she got separated. He also came to know that Prasad was diagnosed w

ith Cancer.

After knowing Prasad's life, Shaw did want her to feel bad anymore. Thus, he took the decision to carry on with the relationship. He took her to the doctors and tried all that he could to cure her. Recently, doctors informed them that Prasad has reached the last stage and nothing could be done anymore.

On hearing this, both them were shocked and were confused about the future.

On Tuesday evening, both of them met and went to Millennium Park and sat there for a few hours. They had some snacks while chatting with each other. Around 8 pm, both them boarded a Howrah-bound vessel from the Shipping Corporation Jetty.

As soon as the vessel reached the middle of River Hooghly, both of them jumped into the water hugging

each other.

Police was immediately informed. Passengers on board of the vessel found Shaw and Prasad's bag and other things and handed over them to police. From Shaw's mobile, police informed his father and Prasad's family was also told about the incident.

Police have informed the adjacent police stations of Barrackpore Police if any dead body is found from the river.
