Cops heckled by miscreants on Kali Puja over bursting of banned firecrackers

KOLKATA: Several police personnel were manhandled while performing their duties on Kali Puja across the city. On the day of Kali Puja, police personnel from Bhawanipore and New Market Police Station faced obstruction while they went to stop bursting banned fire crackers.

According to the sources, Bhawanipore Police Station received a complaint regarding bursting of illegal fire crackers on Wednesday night and a team went to stop the accused persons. When the police arrived at the spot, they saw a 64-year-old person was bursting banned fire crackers. As he was asked to stop, he refused and a heated altercation broke out between the police personnel and him.

When the police intimated him that he could get arrested, the elderly person allegedly pushed one of them. He was arrested later.

On the other hand, a few youths allegedly manhandled police personnel from New Market Police Station on Wednesday night. The same incident had taken place in the area.

Police personnel were also beaten up by some errant bikers in New Town and at Bentinck Street. On Wednesday night, two police personnel had stopped 3 persons riding a bike without headgears at Bentinck Street. When on-duty Sergeant Palash Natta asked them to produce the driving licence and other documents, the rider of the bike identified as Azhar refused to provide them.

In the meantime, some of Azhar's friends came there and tried to flee with Azhar and his bike.

When a traffic constable identified as Suman Biswas tried to stop them, the accused youths pushed Biswas and thrashed him.

After a while, Hare Street Police Station got the news and reached there. On seeing police van approaching, the accused persons managed to flee leaving Azhar and his bike. Azhar was arrested by Hare Street Police Station and the bike was seized.

Police personnel in New Town were also attacked when they tried to stop a biker in a drunken condition. Later, the biker identified as David Raj was arrested.
