Kolkata: An accused in the Trinamool block president Dipak Ghosh murder case in Birbhum managed to evade arrest after police officers were attacked on Monday night. Ghosh was shot on October 21 and succumbed to his injuries on October 22.
According to a source, police got a tip-off on Monday that a person identified as Bulu Shaikh, who was an accused in the murder of Dipak Ghosh, was spotted at Sahapur village in Kankartala.
Based on the information, a police team raided the village at night to nab him. While searching a house, police officers found Shaikh and held him. He was taken out of the house and when the officers were about to board him on the police van some local residents stopped the police. It is alleged several villagers hurled bricks at the police van and police officers.
Two police personnel suffered serious injuries in the attack. While the police officers were being attacked by the local residents Shaikh managed give cops the slip. The injured policemen were admitted to a local hospital. Later, a number of police officers were sent to the village but till then Shaikh had managed to escape. Till Tuesday night, he could not be traced.
Ghosh was shot while he was returning home. Some miscreants blocked his way and shot at him from a close quarter. Three bullets pierced his body and he fell on the ground. Alerted by the sound of gun shots, local residents rushed to rescue him. The miscreants, who reportedly came on motorcycles, fled the spot immediately after Ghosh fell on the ground.
After being informed the police reached the spot and started a probe. Ghosh died at the hospital on October 22 due to multi-organ failure. It is said Ghosh was also attacked earlier by some miscreants.
It is said goons backed by BJP were behind his murder. TMC Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal had said the BJP hatched a plan to kill Ghosh as he had been instrumental in strengthening the Trinamool party across the district. However, BJP had denied the allegations.
