Kolkata: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case of carcass meat sale. The case was handed over to CID on Wednesday. The case was probed by the South 24-Parganas police, before it was taken up by CID.
Sources said that the SIT will be headed by the Special Superintendent (South). This comes at a time when the CID has taken the kingpin of the racket, Biswanath Ghorai alias Bishu, in their custody on Thursday. The CID officers will be interrogating him to get more information in this connection.
A team of CID officers have, however, conducted raids at the house of Bishu at Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas on Wednesday night and the sleuths have collected several documents, which they think will help them reach the root of the case.
Meanwhile, the state government has decided to improve necessary infrastructure to ensure the safety of food. The decision has come following discussions in the first meeting of the high powered committee set up to bring an end to the menace of carcass meat sale.
On Thursday, the first meeting of the committee, headed by Chief Secretary Malay De, was held in Nabanna. The state government has set up the committee to immediately evolve a foolproof mechanism in this regard.
Sources said that there was a detailed discussion in connection with the issue and to come up with suggestions that will help ensure safety of food in the state. The matter related to engaging more officials to check the quality of food has also been discussed, besides talking about the necessity to introduce a new law to ensure food safety. Mamata Banerjee had announced formation of the nine-member committee, after discussion in this connection in the Central level administrative review meeting.
