Kolkata: Chandranath Sinha, state Fisheries minister inaugurated the first ever three-day Gitabitan festival on Saturday. The mela is being organised at Gitabitan plaza inside the proposed Gitabitan township at Santiniketan. The township is being built by Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation ( HIDCO). The proposed township will have a plaza where artisans will stay, along with their family members, produce and sell various products. The housing complexes that are to come up in different parts of Bengal will have themes. Unlike Poush Mela, which has become very commercial now, artisans from far off districts like South Dinajpur and west Midnapore have come with their products. There is a growing interest among people to buy room decorations from these artisans. It may be mentioned that in a recent administrative review meeting held in Purulia, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had asked the artisans to make small masks of Chhau dance so that people living in apartments can buy them and use them as home decorations. There are food stalls. The fair is likely to attract huge crowds.
