Kolkata: The Centre will take up the Rohingya issue with Myanmar through "diplomatic channels" following submission of reports by the state governments, after identifying the Rohingyas in their respective jurisdictions.
The state governments have been asked to identify the Rohingyas and take their biometric prints. Subsequently, they have to submit reports in this regard to the Centre.
After the meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council at Nabanna Sabhaghar on
Monday, Union Home min-ister Rajnath Singh said: "An advisory has been issued. All states have been informed. They have to identify them (Rohingyas). They have to take their biometric prints as well. After that they will send a report to the Centre. The Centre will then initiate (discussion) by diplomatic channel with Myanmar. Then we will get it resolved."
With the advisory being issued by the Centre in this connection, all the states have to take necessary steps to identify the Rohingyas. According to some officers, the Centre has taken the step to check illegal migrants in the country.
Sources said that the matter related to infiltration into Bengal had also come up in the meeting and the state government has protested against such activity. The issues related to flood was also discussed.
It may be mentioned that the state government had repeatedly raised its voice earlier, stating that the floods here are usually "man-made".
Various issues including the matters related to rail movement for socio-economic development of the Eastern Zone, railway electrification, construction of dedicated freight corridor, road overbridges, etc. were also discussed in the meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council.
