Kolkata: The Phoolbagan police have started a case of murder against the husband of 36-year-old Puja Jain, who was found murdered wrapped in a sheet under a bed at her Phoolbagan residence on Friday. The victim's husband, Deepak, has been absconding since the incident. Puja was in an advanced stage of pregnancy.
According to the victim's elder sister, Manjari, who shared the same apartment with her, Deepak was against having a child. Puja had twice become pregnant earlier but had suffered miscarriages.
According to police sources, Puja had been residing in her father's rented apartment behind Dr BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences since she conceived in January. Deepak had come to the apartment on Thursday evening and was not seen since late night.
Manjari was visiting her father who resides in Howrah Maidan area on Thursday evening and returned to Phoolbagan at around 1 am on Friday. She searched for her sister inside the apartment but didn't find her. She then called up her family members and a missing complaint was lodged in the wee hours on Friday at Howrah police station.
On Friday morning, the victim's another sibling, Archana, who had married a few years ago reached the Phoolbagan address after receiving information about Puja's disappearance and when the two sisters decided to clean the apartment in which Puja lived, they discovered the victim's body under the bed wrapped in a white cloth.
They immediately informed the Phoolbagan police station who took away the body for autopsy. "The victim's jaws were broken and the body bore multiple injury marks caused by a sharp object," an investigating officer said.
The sleuths suspect Deepak as he is also absconding.
"Her family members had informed us that Puja blamed her husband for earlier miscarriages," the officer added.
