Kolkata: The state Counsel dealing with the carcass meat case, which is being investigated by state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), informed Alipore Court on Tuesday that the investigation of the case is in its last stage and the charge-sheet will be submitted soon.

Nabakumar Ghosh, the special public prosecutor in the charge of case, informed the court that the CID is yet to receive the forensic report of the sample meat they had seized during the probe from two storage units based in Narkeldanga. "We will submit the charge-sheet in the case within a day we receive the report," Ghosh said.

The judge rejected the bail plea of the four persons, who have been arrested in the case, considering the merit and seriousness of the case. The defence counsel prayed for bail stating that 87 days have gone by and the CID has been unable to submit the charge-sheet.

It may be recalled that it was on April 19 when the case of the carcass meat came to light after locals people beat up two youths and handed them over to the police as they were caught chopping off flesh from dead animals dumped at Budge Budge dump yard. A case was initiated with the Budge Budge police station. Later, the CID took up the case and initiated a probe in this connection.

The Mamata Banerjee government has set up a high-powered committee to evolve a foolproof mechanism to bring an end to the menace of selling of carcass meat.

The committee is headed by Chief Secretary Malay De, along with Home Secretary Atri Bhattacharya, Commissioner of Kolkata Police Rajeev Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of Panchayat and Rural Development Department and Principal Secretaries of Health department, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs department, Food and Supplies department and Animal Resources Development.
