Kolkata: The cape size vessel carrying dry bulk cargo that had anchored at the sandheads of Kolkata Port a few days ago, has already discharged more than 27,795 metric tonnes of cargo with two floating cranes.

The vessel MV Samjohn Solidarity, carrying 1,64,928 MT of coal on account of Adani Enterprises Ltd. had anchored at the sandheads at 6:25 hrs on October 17.

The cargo will be brought to the floating jetty at Haldia, where it will be finally discharged. The vessel, after discharging 1 lakh MT, will proceed to Paradip for discharging the remaining cargo. It is expected to complete the discharge of 1 lakh MT at the sandheads by October 27.

Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) chairman Vinit Kumar said: "We are unable take bigger vessels in the docks due to draft and lock restrictions. Normal parcel size is 30,000 tonnes, while the cape size vessel has brought 1,00,000 MT of coal cargo, which is three times the cargo in one go. This has reduced the cost to trade due to large tonnage in one vessel."

According to a spokesperson of KoPT, the vessel is having a length of 292 metres, beam of 45 metres and draft of 17.21 metres.
