Campaign to raise awareness on blindness in city

Kolkata: Over 550 people, from youngsters to the elderly, marched today in the Victoria Memorial area to raise awareness about ways to prevent blindness.
The "Walk in the Dark" march was led by Australian High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu, Victoria Memorial Hall (VMH) Secretary and Curator Jayanta Sengupta and India Vision Institute (IVI) CEO Vinod Daniel.
The march, which went around the periphery of Victoria Memorial in the heart if the city, was flagged off by Sidhu.
Chess grandmaster Dibyendu Barua, veteran hockey player Gurbux Singh and actor Victor Banerjee were among those who participated in the event.
Curator Sengupta said such campaigns were important to raise awareness about visual impairment, which is a serious problem in India.
Carrying placards and banners with eye care messages, the participants walked blindfolded.
They were led by visually impaired students from the Blind Boys" Academy of Ramakrishna Mission, Narendrapur.
The event came to Kolkata after Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Panjim.
