Kolkata: Former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh's husband MAV Raju was granted bail by Calcutta High Court on Monday. He was arrested on August 7 after his plea for anticipatory bail was rejected by Justice Sanjib Banerjee.
When Raju was in judicial custody, his lawyer had submitted a bail petition in the division bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice R K Kapoor. On Monday during the hearing, Raju's lawyer appealed before the court for his client's bail. He mentioned that Raju has been in custody for the last 55 days, while Ghosh, the main accused in the case, has been granted protection from arrest by the Supreme Court.
Though CID objected to the bail petition, the division bench allowed the submission by Raju's lawyer. Raju was granted an interim bail against a bond of Rs 1 lakh to the Midnapur Court. He has been directed to submit his passport to the court and not to leave Kolkata without permission.
Also Raju has to meet the investigating CID officer once a week.
Raju was arrested on charges of being involved in an extortion case filed at Daspur police station in West Midnapore.
