Kolkata: Homeless residents are in a fix as they are restricted from taking their belongings after Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Ltd (KMRCL) officials started filling cracks of the houses damaged during the tunnel boring work at Bowbazar.
"We are not allowed to enter our home. All the money, clothes and other belongings are now in our house but we are not allowed take it. My son was supposed to appear for a job interview today. He is unable to do so because his documents are in the house," said Susmita Basak, a resident of Durga Pithuri Lane.
While the KMRCL evacuated the buildings and residents of the area were shifted to nearby hotels, shop owners of the locality are worried about facing losses.
"I run a small tea stall at 13, Durga Pithuri Lane. My shop is closed since Sunday. The tea shop is my only source of income. KMRCL has provided accommodation facility to the residents. We want them to provide us space to run tea shops too," said Ananto Basu, a local tea-seller.
Bharat Soni, who owns a jewellery shop at Syakra Para Lane, urged KMRCL to complete the restoration work as soon as possible. "We are suffering losses because our shops are closed for more than 48 hours. If such situation continues then we will die unnatural deaths," he said.
KMC, KMRCL and Kolkata Police have formed a control room at Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration in B B Ganguly Street. This apart, a help desk has also been set up in the locality.
