Darjeeling: A body of a missing student was recovered in a bamboo grove on Thursday.
The family members of the deceased alleged that it is a case of rape and murder. One person has been detained by the police in connection with
the case.
The incident occurred in the Votepatti, Chobarbari area of Mainaguri block in the Jalpaiguri district. The victim, 19-year-old Mampi Karzi had been missing since Wednesday evening.
On Thursday morning, her body was spotted in the bamboo grove adjacent to the railway tracks next to her house. Her hands and legs were tied. The deceased had received a call on her cell phone on Wednesday evening following which she had gone out of her house. When she did not return, her family members went out searching for her.
After locals sighted her body on Thursday morning, police were informed. A large police team arrived from Mainaguri police station and retrieved the body.
Prima facie the victim had been strangled to death with a towel (gamcha). Police have found some vital clues. They feel it could be a case of
love triangle.
A youth of the same area had proposed to this girl around two years ago. However, the family members had objected and she had rejected the proposal. "Since then the youth had been constantly disturbing his daughter," alleged Parimal Karzi, father of
the deceased.
Police are probing into this angle. Some diaries and an ATM card of a Bhutan bank was found in her bag after the incident. However, her cell phone is still missing. Police have detained one Sumit Matabbar, a local youth.
The body was sent for an autopsy at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital
in Siliguri.
The police also visited the Mainaguri College and questioned some of the victim's friends and batch mates.
