Kolkata: The North 24-Parganas police have arrested BJP activist Jagadish Mondal from Sandeshkhali, for his alleged involvement in the murder of Trinamool Congress worker Qyaum Mollah.
The accused had been at large since the incident took place. Police officers were keeping a tab on his whereabouts and conducting raids to nab him. The investigating officers had specific information about his hideout and arrested him late on Tuesday night. Police are carrying out raids to nab the other culprits involved in the crime.
Clashes had broken out in Sandeshkhali under Basirhat sub-division of North 24-Parganas between the BJP and Trinamool Congress activists two weeks ago. The incident had triggered tension at various villages in Sandeshkhali. Two BJP activists were also killed during the incident.
Last week, the district police arrested four persons, including the main accused Akhtar Ali, in connection with the murder of BJP activist Pradip Das. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that Ali had shot Das. The district police subsequently got a breakthrough in arresting the culprits who were involved in his murder.
The incident had triggered a political blame game, with both Trinamool Congress and BJP accusing each other for triggering the clash. The incident also triggered a furor across the state. The district police checked the violence from being spread further.
Police acted promptly and carried out raids in various parts of Sandeshkhali since the incident. The investigating officers are yet to determine
the exact role of Mondal in connection with the murder of Mollah.
