Bike gets stuck under train wheels, rider saved

Kolkata: A person was saved by inches from getting runover by a train while crossing an unmanned level crossing on Sunday morning near Bhogpur railway station in East Midnapore.

Though he managed to get to a safe distance, his bike was hit by the train and it got stuck under the rake resulting malfunctioning of the train movement.

According to sources, on Sunday morning, a person with sacks full of onions was riding his bike. He was passing through an unmanned level crossing. It is alleged that he did not follow the instructions while crossing the unmanned level crossing.

The person rode his bike through the level crossing. When he reached the Up track of Howrah-Kharagpur section, he heard sound of a train's horn. When he looked to towards the source of the sound, he saw a local train was about to hit him. He jumped from his bike and managed to get to a safe distance.

As soon as he jumped, the Up Kharagpur local rammed his bike and moved a few metres. The bike got stuck under the wheels of the train. The drive chain of the bike got entangled with the rake's parts resulting a sudden jerk and loud noise after which the train came to a halt. The sacks full of onions also got stuck under the rake.

The bike rider saw the train came to a halt and fled the spot. Due to the sudden jerk, several passengers fell down from their seats and sustained minor injuries.

Due to the incident, train services on the Howrah-Kharagpur section was hampered for almost two hours. As the bike was stuck under the locomotive pilot's cabin, the train could not be moved. Later, the bike was taken out from under the train and an engine pulled the train to Bhogpur railway station. Government Railway Police (GRP) in Bhogpur railway station was informed about the incident and a complaint has been lodged. Police are searching for the owner of the bike.

On September 20, a similar incident took place at Santragachi railway station. Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express left Howrah Station around 12 pm.

Around 12:06 pm, it was crossing Santragachi railway station. All of a sudden, the locomotive pilot felt a jerk as if some object had got stuck in its wheels.

However, before he could stop the train, an explosion took place later it was seen that a bike was stuck under the engine and the rider had died.
