Kolkata: The Container Corporation of India (Concor) feels that Bengal is a region with great potential for infra development and the company is taking up the matter with various stakeholders to boost container movement in the eastern region including Bengal.

"West Bengal is a region with great potential and there is scope for infra development in terms of logistics. The East coast can be connected in a better way as regards to container movement. There is a need to develop logistics nearer to ports. Since Kolkata supports one third of population of India, there is a great need for logistic development in the region," Chairman & Managing Director, Concor, V Kalyana Rama said at a programme on "Containerization in India-Changing the landscape of logistics Infrastructure organised by Bengal Chamber on Thursday. He added that Concor is trying to develop multi-modal logistic parks. "We already have made 15 such parks and are trying to look for opportunities here. 3PL (Third party logistics) is needed for agri sector and industrial goods," he maintained. He mentioned that studies show logistics cost in India is 14 percent. Proper planning can bring this down. India has a lot of scope for distribution logistics. "The East-West corridor will give boost to Kolkata in terms of industrial goods logistics. We are trying to develop a good logistics software platform. By 2020, we want to be in 100 locations and provide 3PL services to industrial goods and agricultural sectors," he added. It is trying to develop 20 distribution centres across India. The idea is to develop these centres with roughly 50 million square feet warehousing. This will connect with 120 centres across India to provide distribution logistic for industrial, agriculture and consumer goods.
