An auto-rickshaw hit a man at Baria Bazar in Basanti, South 24 Parganas, on Tuesday morning. The auto-rickshaw knocked the man down from behind and sped off from the spot. The local residents rescued Prabhas Mandal, the victim and took him to the hospital.
After an inquiry, police found out that the accused auto-rickshaw flouted the traffic signals. Mandal was hit by the speeding auto-rickshaw, while he was approaching a shop. He has received injuries on his forehead and back. Some residents, particularly young boys, from a local club, rushed to rescue him and infuriated residents blocked the road for three hours.
"Rash driving has become a day to day affair here. Since last week, three road accidents have taken in this area. The cars accelerate without caring about people crossing road," alleged a local resident. "Many school students cross the road on their way to school and back home. This area has become prone to road accident," another resident alleged.
After the accident, local MLA Joyanto Naskar visited the spot. He heard the allegations made by local residents carefully and assured them to discuss the matter with South 24 Parganas district police.
Meanwhile, the district police have initiated raids to arrest the accused auto driver. The eye-witnesses of the incident gave some important clues to the investigators.
