Another glaring incident of medical negligence was brought against Apollo Gleneagles Hospital by some relatives of a patient who was admitted to the hospital on the night of February 1 after a road accident.
Shatabdi Chakraborty, a software engineer was admitted to the hospital after receiving serious injuries in a road accident near Subhas Sarobar at around 2 am on February 1. The hospital authorities did not allegedly perform surgery for next 17 hours as the relatives of the patient failed to pay Rs 1 lakh cash to the hospital.
The relatives of the patient alleged that the hospital refused to conduct the surgery on her leg which had received severe injuries. Ultimately, the hospital started the treatment following the intervention of a police officer. They also alleged that the patient was later shifted to another hospital where her leg had to be amputated.
The doctors of the hospital where the patient was later shifted said that wrong surgery was performed on the patient and as a result of which she had lost her leg.
Chakraborty's family members have alleged that if the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital had immediately attended to the patient, her leg could have been saved. The hospital had charged the patient around Rs 6 lakh.
They also alleged that the hospital authorities had forced them to deposit their PAN Card during the transfer of the patient to the other hospital despite of clearing their dues by a cheque.
The hospital claimed that as the cheque had not been encashed, they would not release the patient. The family of the victim, however, said that the hospital made false statements as the bank statement showed that the cheque had already been cleared. The victim's relatives alleged that her leg was amputated as the hospital denied her treatment in the crucial hours immediately after her admission.
