There is no chance of any norwester or rain in the city and its suburbs for the next couple of days, according to the Alipore Meteorological office.
However, in North Bengal, there may be moderate to heavy showers in the next few days.
Weather experts said the Mercury on Thursday touched around 40 degrees Celsius in Bankura and Purulia, something not very common during this part of the year. The temperature generally starts going up from the middle of April in these two districts. They said in the next week, the temperature in Bankura and Purulia might reach to 42 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be touring Bankura and Purulia next week where the temperature is on the rise. Local leaders said that from 11 am to 4 pm there are fewer people seen on the roads because of the excessive heat.
Scorching sun coupled with excessive humidity kept many people in Kolkata indoors too. Drivers of two-wheelers covered their face and head to save themselves from the unbearable heat. Some NGOs were also seen giving ORS to pedestrians in South Kolkata particularly in Golpark.
Like previous years, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture gave cold water to the pedestrians mixed with sugar and salt. Clearly, the discomfort factor is going up with every passing day in the state.
Doctors have advised people to wear sunglasses and cover the head if they go out during day time.
They said people should avoid going out in the afternoon unless it is an emergency. They said, many people are complaining of fever coupled with headache, sore throat and digestive disorders.
Dr A G Ghosal, a well-known Pulmonologist said, in the past few days, he has seen many children suffering from respiratory problems. He has advised the parents of these children who suffer from such problem not to switch on the AC when their children come back home from school and first mop the sweat. He has also advised people not to take ice cold water and take non-spicy food.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has intensified its drive against cut fruits and coloured water. Atin Ghosh, member, Mayor in council (Health) urged people to not buy cut fruits that are kept in the open and avoid coloured water.
