The two-month-long fight of the victim of acid attack from West Midnapore ended on Sunday morning when she succumbed to her injuries in SSKM Hospital.

The jilted lover of the 30-year-old woman had thrown acid on her in the beginning of January. She had suffered more than 80 per cent burn injuries all over her body. Her eyes were damaged. A major portion of her face and chest were also burnt.

She was initially taken to a local hospital. Later, she was shifted to SSKM Hospital as her condition deteriorated. Doctors in SSKM Hospital tried their level best to cure the woman. Senior doctors of the hospital felt in between that there were certain chances of the woman to survive. But her condition had started deteriorating since the past few weeks.

The police had initiated a probe into the acid attack incident and arrested the accused person, who had thrown acid on the woman.

The local people and the victim's family members demanded maximum punishment for the accused. They also demanded arrest of some of the close friends of the accused though the latter party claimed themselves to be innocent.

With the increase in number of cases of acid attack, the state government has made the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) a nodal agency to check the crime. After getting the responsibility, the investigating agency took steps to prepare the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

The step to prepare the SOP was taken to streamline the investigation of the acid attack cases and to ensure that no important aspect of the heinous crime is left unattended.

Steps to keep a tab on sale of acid have also been taken. Sellers were directed to maintain details of buyers of acid.
