Kolkata: An incident of "accidental firing" took place at the state Secretariat, Nabanna, on Saturday.
After preliminary investigation, the police came to know that the incident took place at around 12.25 pm when the policemen were preparing for a shift change. The accidental firing took place from the gun of a constable posted with the Armed Police.
It is learnt that the incident took place in a bunker near the North Gate of the state Secretariat that was less visited on Saturday compared to the weekdays. However, no one was injured as the bullet hit the wall of the bunker.
Senior police officers visited the spot and tried to understand how it all happened. Sources said the constable was also asked to narrate the details.
It is learnt that steps would also be taken to check repetition of such incidents in future.
A probe has been initiated to find out more details about the incident. There are CCTVs installed at various parts of the state Secretariat and the investigating officers are going through footages of the particular CCTV camera that captured the incident.
Kolkata Police looks after the security at Nabanna that is a high-security zone as it houses the offices of the top brass of the state government.
Moreover, starting from VVIPs to several common people visit the state Secretariat throughout the week. According to some policemen, a major mishap was averted as the bullet hit the bunker's wall and not anybody in particular.
