Kolkata: The body of a 52-year-old woman was recovered from her residence at Tagore Park under Kasba police station area on Saturday late afternoon. Police suspect that the woman, identified as Shila Chowdhury, an officer of National Atlas who used to live alone in the apartment, was murdered.
There were injury marks at the back side of the woman's head and the body was lying in the kitchen.
A charred night dress has also been recovered from beside the body.
The regulator of the cooking gas was found open and a rope was tied to the gas nozzle in such a manner so that it could be pulled from outside the house in the ground floor room.
"The assailant might have suffocated the woman to ensure death," a senior police officer said.
The wires connecting the calling bell of the house was also found snapped off and the almirah was in a rummaged condition.
"Two glasses of juice were found in the drawing room. We feel it was an act of someone known to the lady," an investigating officer said..
The sleuths are questioning the woman's driver who had come to the house in the morning and also her neighbours for further leads.
The woman's only son settled in abroad has been informed of her death.
