KOLKATA: Police arrested a 45-year-old man on Friday on charges of beating up an employee of the private company that bagged a contract of constructing an auditorium in Salt Lake.
Police said it was alleged that extortion money was also demanded from the company. A complaint was lodged on October 28 alleging that three persons had come to the site at FE 505 in Salt Lake, where the auditorium — Rabindra Bhawan is to come up. The company named Tully Enterprise has bagged the contract to build the same from Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.
The three persons, who had entered the site, allegedly assaulted a worker named Alok Maity. They also threatened him with dire consequences if they failed to give them the extortion money. The incident took place at the site at around 11.45 pm on October 27. The worker reported the matter to the senior officials of the company.
Police recorded the statement of Maity. On the basis of the complaint, they initiated a probe and went through the footages of surveillance cameras in and around the incident site. After going through the footages of a CCTV camera installed near Netaji Island, police identified the accused and arrested one Tapas Biswas, alias Mandela, in this connection.
