Kolkata: Forty-year-old Dipu Senapati, who went to Digha from Hooghly, was swept away in strong current on Tuesday as the sea turned turbulent.
The East Midnapore district administration carried out a campaign in all the breach towns following a weather alert.
All the visitors were asked not to go to the sea for bathing. There were police pickets at various points along the beach in different areas of Digha.
It was alleged that the victim along with the others went to the sea defying the police instruction. The victim's wife fell after being hit by a wave. Seeing the incident the victim rushed to the spot for her rescue. The woman was saved but Senapati was swept away. The victim's family was among team that visited Digha on Monday morning.
The body of the victim was later rescued from the sea. The body was sent to the Digha State General Hospital for the post mortem examination.
The weather office had already warned Midnapore district administration that the sea may remain turbulent due to the formation of a low pressure trough.
The MeT office also predicted light to moderate rainfall in various South Bengal districts.
The city received a light rainfall on Tuesday while various South Bengal districts witnessed light to moderate rainfall.
The weather office has already predicted more rainfall in South Bengal in the next 24 hours.
The North Bengal districts will also receive light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday.
