Kolkata: Five persons were arrested for killing a two-month-old girl child at Ghughupara in Liluah, Howrah. It is alleged that they had also killed two more female infants a few months ago and buried their body somewhere near
their houses.
According to locals, Sanjay Gupta and Sangeeta Gupta of Ghughupara had two female infants who died mysteriously a few months ago.
When neighbours asked about the cause of death, they allegedly told them the babies were suffering from some sort of septicemia and died due to that.
On Sunday morning, some of their neighbours saw Sanjay and Sangeeta going out with a girl child born two months ago and a few hours later, they saw them returning without the baby.
Due to suspicion, they enquired about the baby. But Sanjay and Sangeeta could not provide them with satisfactory answers. Smelling a rat, the neighbours detained them and asked several other questions.
During questioning, Sanjay and Sangeeta said the child died due to some disease and they went to bury her in Ambagan area.
On hearing the answer, the neighbours got furious and kept on asking about the reason behind the child's death. Meanwhile, Liluah police station was informed. The accused, Sanjay and Sangeeta, were manhandled by the neighbours before police reached the spot.
Later, the police recovered them and started interrogating them in their house.
Sources informed that during police interrogation, they could not provide satisfactory answers.
Immediately, five including Sanjay and Sangeeta were detained. Without losing time, the police in presence of a magistrate dug the ground where the child's body was buried.
Later, Sanjay and Sangeeta admitted to have killed the child at the police station. They were arrested and will be produced before the Howrah Court on Monday.
Locals alleged that they had killed all their children within a few months of their birth as they were girls.
A neighbour of Gupta family said this time the Gupta family had buried the child alive and demanded stringent action
against them.
