Kolkata: A youth was found dead at Chanditala, near the crossing of Buro Shibtala Main Road and Roy Bahadur Road in Behala on Wednesday night. He was rushed to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Locals alleged that the youth, identified as Surojit Das, alias Suvo (21), was murdered by his friends.
According to locals, Das, by profession a goods vehicle driver, was drinking alcohol with his friends on Wednesday night. At around 11 pm, he got involved in an altercation with his friends due to some dispute. After a while, Das was allegedly thrashed by some of his friends on his head after which he fell on the ground, bleeding profusely.
Two of his friends, identified as Choton Maity and Rakesh Debnath, rushed Das to M R Bangur Hospital where he was admitted.
Later on Thursday early morning, Das was shifted to SSKM Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 6:30 am. Though his friends primarily claimed that they did not know how Das got injured, police found several contradictions in their versions. Suspecting foul play, Maity and Debnath were detained. Meanwhile, sleuths came to know from the doctors that the injury mark on the head was caused by stone or brick. Later sleuths interrogated the duo and came to know that Das had developed some enmity with Debnath. As a result, both of them got involved in an altercation and all of a sudden, Debnath took a brick and hit Das on his head. Later, Debnath was arrested for murdering Das. He will be produced before the Alipore Court on Friday.
