2 youths arrested over death of Burtolla resident

Kolkata: A 35-year-old man identified as Pramod Shaw died after he fell on the footpath in front of 22A, Aurobindo Sarani on Monday night. It has been alleged that he was trying to stop an altercation between two youths when one of them pushed Shaw.

According to sources, on Monday night at around 8:30 pm, Shaw, a resident of 16, Aurobindo Sarani, saw two youths identified as Avishek Gupta and Jibon Debnath get involved in an altercation. Shaw, who used to live near the duo's house, tried to interfere and stop them.

When he was trying to stop Debnath, Gupta started beating him. Debnath also joined Gupta and assaulted Shaw. All of a sudden, one of the accused youths pushed Shaw and he fell on a structure made out of tiles. Shaw head and neck hit the corner of the tiles, resulting in multiple injuries.

Locals saw Shaw lying on the footpath and rushed him to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Following the incident both Gupta and Debnath fled the spot.

Later an eyewitness of the incident lodged a complaint at Burtolla police station against the accused duo, following which they were arrested. They were produced at the concerned court and have been remanded to police custody till March 23. Shaw's family members alleged that Debnath and Gupta have murdered him intentionally.
