Kolkata: Two persons have been arrested by Posta police station on Sunday in the case of two women jumping from the roof of a building with a 3-year-old child on November 14. It has been alleged that the duo had forced the women to commit suicide. Though one died on the same day, the other woman is still undergoing treatment in a hospital.
On November 14, two women identified as Sohini Devi Taparia (62) and Indira Mohata (30), along with her 3-year-old child jumped off from the roof of a five-storey building at Posta. Locals immediately rushed the three to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where the doctors declared Taparia brought dead. Miraculously, the child remained unhurt. During investigation, Indira informed police that she has been married to one Amit Mohata of Jamunalal Bajaj Street, who owns a garment business there. Since the past one-and-half-year, their divorce case was going on in a city court.
Indira was staying with her parents at 10 Burtolla Street. Locals informed that Taparia had another son who is physically challenged. They were going through deep mental stress over family problems.
Indira also claimed that after she gave birth to a girl, she was being tortured. Since then she used to live with her parents, along with her child. It has been alleged that Amit and his elder brother Aditya forced her to commit suicide.
As she was going through a tremendous mental pressure and Taparia was also depressed, both of them jumped from the roof of the building where they were residing.
During investigation, police found several ambiguities in Amit and Aditya's statements. On Sunday, sleuths arrested them on charges of abetment to suicide. They were produced before the Bankshall Court on Monday and were remanded to police custody.
