2 dead in road accident in South 24-Parganas

Kolkata: Two persons died in a road accident that occurred at Kalabadur area under Baruipur police station in South 24-Parganas early on Saturday morning.

The victims have been identified as Mahinuddin Gaji (32) and Alinur Gaji (27). They were riding on a motorcycle when it was hit by a truck. The victims used to work as helpers in trucks and were residents of Baruipur.

At around 3 am on Saturday they were going to Baruipur from Canning on a motorcycle. When they were crossing Kalabadu area, the bike collided head-on with a truck resulting in serious injuries.

The incident took place few meters away from Baruipur police station.

After being informed, the police reached the spot and took the injured victims to Baruipur hospital where the doctors pronounced them brought dead.

The truck driver fled the spot along with the vehicle immediately after the incident. Police are investigating how the accident happened. They are conducting a probe to ascertain if the truck driver was in an inebriated state. The cops are conducting raids to nab the truck driver.

The nature of the accident suggests that the motorcycle was running at a speed between 50-60 km per hour and hence the biker could not control it when the truck suddenly came closer. The motorcycle had been damaged during the accident and it was later seized by the district police.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that poor visibility during the early morning hours might have led to the mishap.

They are trying to find out if they were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. The exact cause is yet to be ascertained by the investigating officers. However, cops are waiting for the post-mortem report.
