Edu dept to table Bill to give varsity status to St Xavier’s

The Education department will table two Bills on December 15 and 16 in the Assembly.
A Bill to upgrade St Xavier’s College to a university will be tabled on December 15. It may be recalled after the college was granted autonomy, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had told the authorities that it would be upgraded to a university. The second campus of St Xavier’s College is coming up at Rajarhat. The college run by the Fathers of Society of Jesus has played an important role in spreading education in Bengal.

An important Bill entitled University and College Teachers (Amendment) Bill, 2016 will be tabled on December 16. Though Education minister Partha Chatterjee refused to discuss about the content of the Bill, sources said that it deals with the extension of service of college and university teachers, a burning issue in the academic circle in Bengal now.

Chatterjee will place the West Bengal School Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Assembly on Wednesday. The Bill will repeal the West Bengal School Service Commission (Amendment ordinance, 2016. 

According to the Bill, a central commission shall prepare a panel by conducting the state level selection test to appoint teachers and non teaching staff in schools and also monitor, supervise, control and coordinate the activities of the Regional Committee which shall be subordinate to the Central Committee.
