Bidhannagar Commissioner of Police Gyanwant Singh was injured when a car hit his vehicle on Ma flyover Friday evening. The car was seized and the driver arrested. Singh was taken to a private nursing home where he was treated. He received injury on his right arm.
Police said the driver, in a bid to overtake Singh’s vehicle, lost control and hit him from behind. Singh, who was sitting in the back seat, sustained injuries. His security personnel stopped the vehicle. Singh was taken to a nursing home and necessary tests were done, where he was advised by the doctors to take rest.
A senior police officer said though the speed limit is restricted on Ma flyover, drivers have a tendency to accelerate on the flyover. Despite CCTV surveillance keeping a watch on all vehicles, drivers often ignore it and the average speed of vehicles varies anything between 80 and 100 km per hour, which is almost double the official speed limit.
There are drivers who not only drive very fast, but have an urge to overtake at the sharp bend opposite Science City. In Thursday’s accident, the driver of the offending vehicle lost control while negotiating a bend and hit Singh’s vehicle.
