Following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s declaration that she will resign if it is proved that she called Union Home minister Amit Shah begging for restoration of her party’s national status, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has threatened legal action against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari if he does not withdraw his statement.

The TMC has sent a notice to Suvendu after he allegedly claimed during a public meeting in Singur, Hooghly that Mamata fell at Shah’s feet over the phone requesting restoration of TMC’s national party status. He alleged that Shah refused to acknowledge her request, telling her that the Election Commission of India is a stickler for rules, unlike the commissioner of the West Bengal state election commission.

The notice, signed by TMC MP Derek ‘O’ Brien warned that “Such words have been uttered in respect of and involving our Hon’ble Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee. We have been advised by our Hon’ble Chairperson that no such conversation ever took place between her and Sri Amit Shah. By making such a false statement, you have attempted to defame our party and mislead the public. It is evident that you have caused to make such an incorrect and motivated statement without making any enquiry to verify its authenticity including from Sri Amit Shah and in fact knowing the same to be a lie.”

The letter also warned that legal action will also be taken against Amit Shah who will be “needlessly” dragged into this due to Suvendu’s fault.

“Under such circumstances, we call upon you to immediately withdraw such false statement failing which we shall be constrained to initiate appropriate legal proceedings against you and Sri Amit Shah. who needlessly shall be drawn into serious litigation for such falsehood Of yours,” the

letter read.
