Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Alifa Ahmed, who recently won the by-election from the Kaliganj Assembly Constituency in Nadia, will be sworn in as an MLA at the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Speaker Biman Banerjee will administer the oath at 3 pm in the Syed Nausher Ali Hall. Ahmed registered a landslide victory in the Kaliganj Bypoll, defeating her nearest rival, BJP’s Ashish Ghosh, by a margin of 50,049 votes. Her winning margin surpassed that of her late father, Nasiruddin Ahmed, who had secured the seat in the 2021 elections. The bypoll was necessitated by his demise. According to Assembly sources, the Raj Bhavan has already approved the oath-taking ceremony. On Tuesday, Ahmed visited the Assembly for official formalities related to her swearing-in. During the visit, she expressed grief over the tragic death of Class IV student Tamanna Khatun, who was killed in a bomb explosion on June 23.

“I am deeply shocked by the incident. Such acts have no place in a civilised society. Our party strongly condemns it.

The police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure exemplary punishment for the culprits,” Ahmed said, adding that she would visit Tamanna’s family soon after taking her oath. During her maiden visit to the Assembly, Ahmed signed official documents related to her induction and toured the premises. Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Shaikh, backed by the Left Front, finished third in the bypoll with 28,348 votes.
