Raiganj: Authorities of the Kaliyaganj Panchayat Samity of North Dinajpur district have taken steps to enhance the infrastructure and beautify the crematorium on the banks of the Tangan River near the India-Bangladesh border in Radhikapur.

The project will be carried out with a budget of Rs 5 lakh, allocated from the 15th Finance Commission fund of the Panchayat Samity.

The crematorium, which had been in a deteriorated state, lacked essential facilities.

The furnace was old and damaged, there was no proper seating arrangement and visitors were left without shelter during harsh weather conditions. Additionally, drainage and water supply were inadequate.

Residents of the border villages had long demanded better infrastructure for the crematorium. Responding to this, Hiranmay Sarkar, Sabhapati of Kaliyaganj Panchayat Samity, stated: “We have allotted Rs 5 lakh to develop the crematorium’s infrastructure.

Considering the flood-prone nature of the area, the furnace’s basement height will be increased.

We will also add shade, drains, running water, toilets and seating arrangements for visitors.”
