Kolkata: Kolkata Police on Tuesday informed that certain individuals were trying to disclose the identity of the Kasba law college rape victim violating the Supreme Court’s guideline to protect the identity and privacy of a rape victim.
According to police, after the heinous crime at the law college, certain individuals are attempting to disclose the identity.
Once the issue came to the police’s attention, they began an inquiry to identify the individuals involved and were likely to initiate legal action against them. In a social media post, Kolkata Police on Tuesday wrote: “It has come to notice that certain individuals are attempting to disclose the identity of the victim in the Kasba case through the circulation of confidential documents or by other means. This is a serious violation of the law. Strict legal action shall be initiated under the relevant provisions against anyone found involved in such acts. The public is strongly advised to refrain from sharing any information that could lead to the identification of the victim...”
In 2018 ,Supreme Court mentioned guidelines for the protection of a rape victims’ identity. Based on the judgement and the mention by the Supreme Court, the Women safety Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a Standard Operating Procedure where it was mentioned that no person can print or publish in print, electronic, social media, etc. the name of the victim or even in a remote manner disclose any facts which can lead to the victim being identified.
