Pregnant elephant found dead

Darjeeling: The carcass of a fully-grown pregnant elephant was recovered beside a spring in Sukhiakhola under the Bamonpokhri Range of the Kurseong Forest Division on Tuesday during a routine patrol. According to Forest department sources, the elephant, estimated to be around 25-year-old, may have died due to illness. Kurseong DFO Debesh Pandey said: “Elephants often approach waterbodies when unwell. This one too was found near a spring. The exact cause of death can be confirmed only after post-mortem.”

Cops seize 200 gm brown sugar

Malda: English Bazar Police seized 200 grams of suspected brown sugar on June 30 in two separate incidents. Mohammad Sahidur Momin of Kaliachak was arrested for using a minor to transport drugs. Two others from Bihar were also caught during naka checking with 100 grams of brown sugar. Cases have been filed under the NDPS Act and other relevant laws.

siliguri: Forest workers foil timber smuggling bid, one held

Siliguri: Forest workers of Dabgram Range in Baikunthpur Division thwarted an illegal timber smuggling attempt near Jalpai More in Siliguri on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, they intercepted a pick-up van and a scooter carrying timber. One smuggler fled, while the van driver, Bishwanath Barman of Matigara, was arrested. A large quantity of sal and teak wood worth approximately Rs 1.5 lakh was seized.
