The Jadavpur University has decided to continue with the five-year evening Bachelors in Technology programme after the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) mentioned that universities can follow a flexible schedule.

Earlier, in its approval handbook for 2019-2020, only day-time engineering programmes would be recognised as regular courses but as per its latest approval handbook for 2023-24, they have mentioned that the programme can be offered as per the ‘stakeholders’ convenience.

In a meeting held on Friday, it was decided by the authorities to continue with it. The meeting was attended by faculty of engineering and technology (FET) as well as interim V-C Amitava Dutta and pro V-C Chiranjib Bhattacharjee.

They have been running a five-year programme in the three disciplines — civil, electrical and mechanical engineering for working professionals. According to an official, the process for admissions will begin soon.

The admission tests for these courses are conducted by JU. The evening courses will continue but according to the official, the course will not be termed as evening courses considering AICTE has decided to remove these terminologies.

It can be mentioned that on July 24, a notice by the university administration stated that no decision was taken in the University regarding the closure of five-years UG (evening) engineering programmes conducted by civil, electrical and mechanical engineering departments of Jadavpur University.

According to the notice, the ongoing programmes have AICTE approval. Independent approval for the programmes were obtained till 2020-2021 as per AICTE norms. It appeared that in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, a combined approval of day and evening courses, with total intake, has been given by AICTE following their revised policy, the notice mentioned.
