Balurghat: Cleaning work begins on Atreyee Canal

Update: 2025-07-01 18:46 GMT

BALURGHAT: The long-neglected Atreyee canal in Balurghat is finally undergoing cleaning, dredging and renovation, following repeated appeals and public pressure from local residents. The canal, once a vital system for the area, had become heavily clogged with silt and waste, leading to water stagnation and a breeding space for mosquitoes.

The issue had gained public attention after numerous complaints and petitions were submitted, urging authorities to initiate proper cleaning measures. Responding to these appeals, the Balurghat Division of the Irrigation department has launched a special cleaning drive using boats and red ladders. The cleaning operation started from the canal section near the Balurghat jail and will continue through various affected parts of the city. Engineer Ankur Mishra from the Irrigation department confirmed that a scientific cleaning process has begun. “We will clean the canal in phases, addressing mosquito breeding zones and preventing disease outbreaks,” he said. Previously, residents of Gitanjali Bazar, Motor Kali and Payel Bridge areas, adjacent to this canal, had raised strong concerns over the unhygienic condition of the canal, particularly at night when the foul smell became unbearable. Locals from these areas also complained about waterlogging and the urgent need for drain maintenance.

Ashok Mitra, Chairman of Balurghat Municipality, stated that the cleaning initiative had been proposed earlier, and its implementation was delayed. “We are glad that the work has finally begun,” he added.

The canal cleaning project is expected to significantly improve sanitation and water flow in the town, as stated by the residents of the town.
