The state government has decided to hand over flats to 480 families of refugees at Bon Hooghly in North 24 Parganas, who had been staying in the area for decades, at the earliest.

State Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Rajib Banerjee said: “The motto is quite clear. Our target is to complete the construction of flats as early as possible for the benefit of the people and steps would be taken to expedite the work.”

It may be recalled that the residents had ran from pillar to post seeking help for proper rehabilitation during the Left Front regime. However, their pleas fell on deaf ears.

After the change of guard in the state in 2011, the decision to provide the families decent housing was taken. No stone was left unturned to complete the project as early as possible and to hand the flats to the families.

It was decided to provide flats to 540 such families in the area. Keys of flats were handed over to 60 families a few months before the Assembly elections.

As a result, 480 families now remain who will be given the houses.

The Project Implementation Committee (PIC) held a meeting on Sunday morning.

The meeting was attended by the state Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation Minister, local MLA Tapas Roy from Baranagar Assembly constituency and concerned senior officials.

Steps needed to be taken to complete the project as early as possible were discussed. Necessary steps were taken to solve the problems which cropped up while undertaking work for completion of project.

It is learnt that a target has been fixed to complete a particular number of flats within a scheduled time.

The completion of the project will help thousands of people.

Hence, directions have been given to undertake work at a faster pace so as to complete it without any more delay.
