Zero crime in city will be ‘acche din’ for Delhi Police: Top cop

“Acche din for Delhi Police would be when there will be zero crime in the city,” said BS Bassi, Delhi Police Chief during Annual conference on Friday morning. But the ground reality and the current statistics of the crime rate in the city shows no hope of Acche din, atleast for few more years.

Millennium Post had earlier reported that in 2014, there was upto 100% increase in the crime rate as compared to the previous year.

By the end of 2015, Bassi wants every women in the city must fill the physical gap between a man and a woman by learning self-defence art. “It will take time to change the mindset of the people who tend to assault women believing that men are superior to women. So by learning self-defence, each women in the city would be able to retaliate if they become a victim,” Bassi said adding, “I want every girl to be a ‘brown-belt’ till December.” In 2014, around 142 self-defence training programmes were held in which around 15583 girls were trained.

This year safety of women would be the prime concern for Delhi Police as out of 1,47,230 cases that were reported under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code, as many as 14,187 cases were crime against women.

Shockingly, out of 2069 rape cases, only 4.06% of the rapes were committed by unknown persons, rest 95.6% were committed by known persons. In as many as 586 rape cases the accused was in live-in-relation or refused to marry. The data further revealed that in 420 cases the accused were neighbours of the victim, 919 persons were friends or family friends, in 282 cases the accused were relatives, in 66 cases, employers or co-workers have raped the victims, whereas in 84 cases the accused were found to be strangers. In 2014 till December 15, 4179 molestation cases were registered by the women whereas in 2013, as many as 3345 molestation cases were filed. Similarly, there is a rise in eve-teasing cases too as compared to the previous year.

In 2013, around 879 eve-teasing cases were reported by the women whereas in 2014 it has gone upto 1282.
