The AAP government’s vision to provide free wi-fi across the national Capital will take at least a year to materialise, Dwarka MLA and Multi-media expert Adarsh Shastri confirmed on Monday, during an interaction.
Even before the AAP took over the reins of Delhi, Chief Secretary D M Spolia had started acting up on the promises made by the nascent party and directed authorities to immediately prepare a foolproof plan to provide free wi-fi across the city and to construct 20 new colleges.
Presently, Shastri is looking into the Information Technology department and it is expected that a foolproof action plan on wi-fi is in progress.
While modalities for providing wi-fi are being worked up on, it will not be an unlimited free-service. Major thrust areas would be commercial places, Universities as well as institutional belts. The New Delhi Municipal Council has already started wi-fi services in Khan Market and Connaught Place.
“The wi-fi facilities in Khan Market and Connaught Place are running successfully,” said NDMC’s spokesperson.
“Officials from the Delhi government’s IT department have been directed to immediately prepare a foolproof action plan to provide free wi-fi across the city as it was one of the primary poll agendas of the AAP,” said a senior government official. He also said that the IT department officials have been given three to four days to complete the task.
“Once the new ministers are sworn-in, the department’s officials will offer presentations on the free wi-fi concept before Arvind Kejriwal,” sources said.
