A Trinamool Congress leader from Basanti in South 24 Parganas has been fighting for his life in a hospital after some miscreants slashed him with a sharp weapon.

The incident had triggered tension at Tetulia village of Basanti on Tuesday night. It was learnt that the victim, Alam Bari Seikh, a Trinamool Congress leader of the area was returning home on motorcycle from the local party office on Tuesday night when some unidentified miscreants blocked his way and attacked him with a sharp weapon. When the victim tried to oppose the accused, he was slashed with a sharp weapon.

As a result of this incident, the victim fell on the ground after he received severe injuries on his right hand. After hearing the screams of Alam, the local residents rushed to his rescue and found him lying in a pool of blood on the roadside.

They rushed the victim to Basanti Block health centre. He received more than ten stitches on his right hand. He was later shifted to another hospital as his condition deteriorated.

According to the preliminary investigation police suspect that accused were at least 3-4 in numbers who came on motorcycle. They fled the spot immediately after the incident.

Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack. They are examining if there was any political angle to it. Police have arrested one Rafikul Sardar in this connection so far. Police are conducting raids to nab the other culprits.

The local Trinamool Congress leaders have alleged that CPI(M) backed goons might have led the attack as the victim had been instrumental in strengthening the party’s organisation in the district. As a result of this, the accused hatched a plan to kill the victim to weaken the organisation, TMC leaders alleged.
