Rajiv Gandhi case: CBI opposes death row convict’s plea

Update: 2013-10-11 00:46 GMT
Three weeks after death convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, AG Perarivalan sought to virtually reopen the assassination case by requesting the designated TADA court to order and monitor further probe, the CBI has said such a move would be contempt of the Supreme Court.

Dismissing Perarivalan’s allegations such as a claim that several important files were either stolen from or destroyed at the prime minister’s office and that the CBI’s MDMA had not properly probed several leads suggesting international conspiracy to the assassination, the CBI said they were baseless and devoid of merit.

In a counter-affidavit filed in the court of V additional sessions judge N Dhandapani, who held the additional charge of the designated court on Thursday, CBI special public prosecutor N Ranganathan said entertaining the petition would amount to commenting on the findings of the apex court in the case. ‘It smacks of contempt of court,’ he cautioned, adding that the case had been investigated, tried, adjudicated and even the appeals had been decided by the Supreme Court.
