That the Central Bureau of Investigation had launched a case against Digvijay Singh, former chief minister of Madya Pradesh, for corruption is no surprise. Singh stands accused of corruption in land scam, dating back to when he was the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. The state government had, durng his time, allegedly given undue concessions to a land mafia in return for favours or sums of money. The case has been hanging fire in a Madhya Pradesh court for some time. However, little progress has been made on it so far. The CBI has been asked repeatedly by courts to complete the enquiry on time but it has failed to do so. The case is quite old, yet the CBI seem to have its hands tied when it comes to the investigation of the case. It is as if powerful forces are influencing the enquiry. Many Congress party members at present stand accused of corrupt practices.
In many of these cases the CBI is the investigating authority. Yet, hardly any Congress minister has been arrested. None of the ministers have resigned. Even the media reports of their activites are truncated and no clear picure has emerged so far of their illegal activites.
The name of the finance minister has also cropped up in corruption cases. It is not just a case of election irregularities which is pending at the courts. There is also a case of corruption against his son for fraudulent corporate activities which is currently being investigated. Chidambaram is not the only one. It is also our prime minister Manmohan Singh on whose door charges were laid.
That is where the role of the CBI is suspect. It is just not able to nab these people. It seems to merely spend its time arguing matters in courts.
It is a fact that most of these people come from affluent backgrounds and are rich and powerful. It is a fact that the rich and the powerful seem to get away even with criminal activities while the book is thrown at the poor. The list of those in the current ruling dispensation who are involved in corruption cases and scams seems endless. It is, therefore, time for the CBI to pull up its socks.
