The director generals of military operations (DGMOs) of the Indian and Pakistan armies will be using the hotline connection installed for them as a confidence building measure on Wednesday (9 January), while parallel moves are already afoot to fully secure the Line of Control (LOC).
But the decade-old ceasefire along the LOC was challenged severely on Tuesday when regular soldiers of the Pakistan army troops penetrated up to 400 meters inside the Indian territory in the Mendhar sector, killing two soldiers of the defending Indian Army.
The intruders, taking cover in the intense fog and mist, were actually on the way to an Army post nearby when they were spotted by an area domination patrol of the Indian Army. So the troops of both sides engaged in a fire-fight for 30 minutes.
In a heavily-forested area of the Krishna Ghati in Poonch, some of the soldiers of the Pakistan Army isolated two Lance Naiks of the Indian Army and killed them.
Since the killers left the bodies of the two non-commissioned officers behind, the Indian soldiers found one of the corpses being severely mutilated. The brutal invaders escaped the scene of the fight, taking advantage of the weather.
This dangerous aggression came a day after Pakistan had lodged official protest against a supposed LoC violation by the Indian troops in the Haji Pir sector on Sunday, a charge vociferously contested by New Delhi.
However, senior officials both at Udhampur headquarters of the Northern Command and in New Delhi refused to see it as the end of the ‘ceasefire’ on the LOC that has lasted for ten years. One senior official said, ‘The ceasefire has certainly been violated in the area, but in other parts of the LOC, the ceasefire have held. So I don’t see it as an end to the ceasefire.’
Sources said, Indian government termed Tuesday’s aggression as a ‘significant escalation in the series of ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts.’
Northern Command general officer commanding Lieutenant. General. KT Parnaik rushed to Poonch to monitor the responses. The two casualties of the Indian Army are Lance Naik Hemraj and Lance Naik Sudhakar Singh. The officials said it was a ‘grave provocation by the Pakistan army,’ which will be dealt with sternly through official channels.
The two armies had declared ceasefire along LOC in November 2003. But last year i.e. 2012 proved to be the worst in terms of violations. According to some calculations, there were more than 80 ceasefire violations in 2012. And the body count of 10 casualties also reflect the ferocity of the violations.
