The incident instantly led to a political blame-game and the AAP candidate from the area, Naresh Balyan, was accused of being the owner of the godown. The police however haven’t been able to ascertain the ownership yet and the FIR was registered against unknown persons.
AAP also maintained that their candidate had got nothing to do with the recovered liquor and said that these are all old tactics of the opposition to defame the party.
However, according to a source in police, the godown is adjascent to the residence of the AAP candidate.
The bottles were stashed in as many as 497 cartons. The recovery was as follows: Royal Stag whiskey in 199 cartons containing 375 ml bottles (24 bottles) and 147 cartons containing 750 ml bottles (12 bottles), and Double Stag whiskey in 50 cartons of 375 ml bottles (24 bottles) and 101 cartons containing 750 ml bottles (12 bottles).
The raid was conducted jointly by the crime branch of Delhi Police and the flying squad of the chief election commission. “The raid was based on a tip-off according to which large quantity of liquor was stocked in a godown at Kabari Bazar Road in Om Vihar area of west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar. The input was shared with the Returning Officer (RO) who was also present during the raid,” said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Millennium Post had earlier reported about rampant trade of illicit liquor during the election season. According to sources, demand of whiskey is very high during the election season and procuring liquor from the neighbouring states can assure a margin upto 40 percent.
