North, East MCDs to install water harvesting systems in parks

Update: 2015-07-11 01:20 GMT
Annoyed over puddles in parks during monsoon, the East and North Delhi Municipal Corporations are mulling to install water harvesting systems in parks spread over five acres.

With this, the civic agencies aim to trap and put the run-off water to good use. The Corporations have said that the areas where groundwater has hit the rock bottom are likely to be the first beneficiary.
“In order to maintain parks during the monsoon, the civic agency has decided to work on <g data-gr-id="32">water</g> harvesting system. A survey is being conducted in the Corporation area to identify parks, where the systems could be installed. The Corporation officials and councillors are visiting at least 12 parks daily to identify the locations. Initially, big parks will be covered,” said Lata Gupta, Chairman of EDMC Standing Committee.

“While the civic agency wants to install harvesting systems in all its parks spread over five acres,
initially, 12 parks will be chosen. In the Corporation area, groundwater extraction is banned, so we have to use tankers. But in other areas under the  EDMC’s jurisdiction, groundwater is regularly pumped out to irrigate parks because the use of treated water is prohibited. Harvesting seems to be the only option to recharge the depleting water sources. Water trapped through this process will be used for watering plants in the parks,” added the Standing Committee Chairman.

An official said that the localities to have the water harvesting systems will include certain parts of East and North Delhi.

“We have been working on this regard. Several RWAs are also in touch for permissions to maintain their colony parks,” the official added.
