The IAF being the most technology intensive force has emphasised the aspect of technology adoption and practice. It is also looking into integrating ‘developmental projects’ like MAFI (Modernisation of Air Fields) project, being undertaken by the Tata SED, with the help Selex Sistemi; new acquisitions planned like the much touted medium, multirole combat aircraft (MMRCA); operational status of the new acquisitions in C4ISR (command, control, communication, computers and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance category) and other attendant issues related to manpower, for example.
The IN, in the same way are going to get covered under the second part of the MAFI project, along with the Indian Coast Guards. Its commander’s are reviewing the integration aspects of the INS Vikramaditya that is sailing in the western seabord, still without a missile shield and without its complement of MiG-29 Ks flying from its deck.
They are also emphasising on internalising the lessons learnt from the various exercises it conducts through the year. The senior officers are planning for ‘building capabilities for the future.’
‘Deliberation are on about enhancing the battle-space and maritime domain awareness, review of the coastal security, operationalisation of NC3I project for realisation of the multi-agency national network under the national MDA, maintenance philosophy, and quality of refits for effectiveness of platforms,’ the navy spokesperson, Captain Dalip Kumar Sharma, said.
On the IAF side, the air force chief, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha told the conference of the five operational commands and two functional commands of training and maintenance, he was happy with ‘the commanders for maintaining a high state of preparedness and expressed his satisfaction at the professionalism of air-warriors.’
It can be safely assumed that the IAF conference will be discussing the depleting squadron strength that is becoming essentially a national security problem, for which the politico-military establishment has to find solutions and quickly.
