A 25-bedder surgical ICU unit will be inaugurated at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) on Thursday.
The ICU unit will be exclusively dedicated to the surgery department of the hospital. Equipped with the most advanced electronic gadgets, the surgical ICU unit will be able to conduct rare surgeries. It was learnt from sources that surgeries could be conducted on the patients at this unit. If the condition of a patient at the surgery department of the hospital turns critical, he or she will be shifted to the Operation Theater.
Once the surgical ICU is started, the patients will no longer be taken to the Operation Theater as all the critical surgeries would be conducted from here itself. It would take a long time to shift a patient from one department to the other. The equipment will greatly contribute to strengthen the health infrastructure of the hospital. It often becomes difficult for the hospital authorities to shift a patient admitted at the surgery department to the other department due to the condition of the patient. Once the new facility is started in the hospital, the patients will no longer be required to be shifted to the Operation Theater. This is because all the critical surgeries would now be carried out at the surgical ICU. There is always a risk to shift a critical patient to the Operation Theater. There will initially be 25 beds in the ICU which will prove immensely handy to the hospital authorities.
